YesPotato is a small, free set of tools for getting media out of social platforms and onto your own device. Today it does one thing: Instagram — Reels, Stories, Highlights, photos and carousels. That focus is deliberate. A tool that does one thing properly beats one that does eight things badly.
Why it exists
Instagram has no download button, and the content you care about is temporary by design. Stories vanish in 24 hours. Reels get buried by the algorithm or deleted outright. A carousel you wanted to reference for a project is three taps and a lost bookmark away from being gone. The platform is built for scrolling, not for keeping.
Most tools that fill this gap are hostile: pop-unders, fake download buttons, a login prompt asking for your Instagram password, or a 360p file labelled “HD”. We built the version we wanted to use.
How it actually works
When you paste a link we read the same public data Instagram serves to a browser, find every rendition of the media, and pick the best one. For videos the best quality is usually stored as separate video and audio streams inside a DASH manifest, so we merge them with a lossless stream copy before handing you the file. No re-encoding means no quality loss — what you save is what Instagram is holding.
Nothing is stored on our servers. Media is streamed through to you and the connection is closed. We cache public metadata for a few minutes so a viral link isn't fetched from Instagram thousands of times a minute, and that's the extent of it.
What we won't do
- Ask for your Instagram login. There is nothing to sign into, ever.
- Touch private accounts. If it isn't publicly visible, we don't fetch it.
- Stamp a watermark on your file or degrade the quality to upsell a “pro” tier.
- Run pop-unders, fake buttons or redirect chains.
- Sell your data. We don't have any to sell.
How it's paid for
Advertising, kept to a small number of clearly labelled slots, plus our free Android app. That's it. There's no subscription, no credit system and no download cap — and there won't be.
Respect the creators
Everything here works on public content, and the copyright stays with whoever made it. Save it for yourself, get permission before you reshare, and credit properly. If you're a rights holder who wants something removed, our DMCA page explains how, and we act on valid notices.
