Instagram deliberately has no download button. That's a reasonable product decision on their side and an enormous inconvenience on yours — the reel you wanted to rewatch on a flight is gone the moment you lose signal, and the story a friend posted disappears in 24 hours whether you saved it or not. This tool closes that gap without asking you to trust it with your credentials.

Stories are a race against a 24-hour clock

Every other format on this site is permanent until someone deletes it. Stories are the exception: they are built to disappear, which changes both what you can save and how you should think about saving it.

You are downloading a live window, not an archive

A Story exists for 24 hours from the moment it was posted, then Instagram moves it to the owner's private archive. There is no public record afterwards — so if a profile posted yesterday and you check today, there is genuinely nothing behind the link. That is not a tool failure, and no downloader can retrieve an expired Story. If something matters, save it the day you see it.

A username is enough — and nothing is logged against you

You do not need to hunt down a Story link. Type @handle and we resolve the account, then pull every Story it currently has active. Because your Instagram account is never involved at any stage, you do not appear in the viewer list — which is the practical difference between watching a Story in the app and saving it here. Nobody is notified either way.

What you get is the flattened frame, stickers included

Polls, music stickers, location tags, countdowns and question boxes are rendered into the Story image or video before Instagram serves it. So a saved Story looks exactly like what you saw — text overlays and all — rather than arriving as a bare photo with the decorations stripped off. Interactive elements obviously stop being interactive once they are a file.

Close-friends Stories and Stories from private accounts are out of reach by design: seeing them requires being an approved follower, and we do not impersonate one.

What “original quality” actually means

Most downloaders hand you a 640×360 file and call it HD. Instagram stores several renditions of every upload, and the good ones are hidden inside a DASH manifest as separate video and audio streams — which is exactly why so many tools skip them and serve the low-quality progressive file instead. YesPotato reads the manifest, picks the highest bitrate rendition available and merges the streams losslessly with a stream copy. No re-encoding means no generation loss: the file you save is bit-for-bit the video Instagram is holding.

Privacy: what we do and don't keep

We never ask for your Instagram username or password, and there is nothing to sign into. Links you paste are processed in memory and the resulting media is streamed through to you rather than saved. Popular links are cached for a few minutes purely so a viral post isn't fetched from Instagram a thousand times a minute, and that cache holds public metadata only. The person whose content you download is never notified — there is no view receipt on a download.

Is it legal to download Instagram Stories?

Saving content for personal, offline use — the modern equivalent of taping a song off the radio — is broadly accepted in most jurisdictions. Redistributing someone else's work, passing it off as yours, or using it commercially is not, and no downloader changes that. The copyright stays with whoever created it. Our rules of thumb: keep it for yourself, credit the creator if you reshare with permission, and never repost without it. YesPotato only works with content that is already publicly visible, which is the same material anyone could see by opening Instagram.

What we can and can't reach

If a post is public, we can fetch it. If an account is private, we cannot — and we won't pretend otherwise. Private profiles, follower-only stories, deleted posts and archived content are all out of reach by design, because getting to them would mean impersonating a follower. Stories are the other hard limit: they exist for 24 hours, so a link to yesterday's story genuinely has nothing behind it.

Tips that save time

• On mobile, use the ••• menu → Copy link rather than the browser address bar — it gives a cleaner URL.
• For stories you can paste just the @username; there's no need to hunt down a story link.
• For highlights, open the highlight and use Copy link — the URL contains the highlight id we need.
• Carousel posts return every slide at once. Use “Download all as ZIP” instead of tapping through.
