Where photo downloads quietly go wrong

Photos look like the easy case and are actually where most downloaders lose the most quality. Two specific traps, plus one thing about carousels that catches people out.

The obvious image URL is a 640-pixel downscale

Instagram's page data offers several versions of every photo, and the one that is easiest to grab — the field a scraper reaches for first — is a 640-pixel preview built for feed thumbnails. Take it and you have thrown away most of the picture. The full-size file is a different entry in the same list, distinguishable only by the resize directive inside its CDN address. We read that directive and take the unresized, uncropped original. On a real 1660×982 photo the difference measured 57 KB versus 505 KB — the same image, roughly nine times the data.

Cropped is not the same as large

Instagram also generates square and centre-cropped variants, some of which are dimensionally bigger than the true original. A naive “pick the largest” rule happily hands you a 981×982 square crop of a wide landscape photo. We rank uncropped above cropped before we compare sizes at all, so you get the whole frame the creator posted, in the aspect ratio they chose — 4:5 portrait, 1:1 square or 1.91:1 landscape.

Carousels are one link and up to twenty files

A carousel post holds up to twenty slides behind a single URL, and they can be a mix of photos and videos. Every slide is returned individually so you can pick one, and “Download all as ZIP” takes the set in order with sensible filenames. That is the difference between one click and twenty — and it is also how you avoid accidentally saving only the cover slide, which is what happens when a tool treats a carousel as a single image.

The caption is shown alongside the result so you can copy it, but it is never rendered onto the image. What you download is the clean original file.

What “original quality” actually means

Most downloaders hand you a 640×360 file and call it HD. Instagram stores several renditions of every upload, and the good ones are hidden inside a DASH manifest as separate video and audio streams — which is exactly why so many tools skip them and serve the low-quality progressive file instead. Privacy: what we do and don't keep

We never ask for your Instagram username or password, and there is nothing to sign into. Links you paste are processed in memory and the resulting media is streamed through to you rather than saved. Popular links are cached for a few minutes purely so a viral post isn't fetched from Instagram a thousand times a minute, and that cache holds public metadata only. The person whose content you download is never notified — there is no view receipt on a download.

Is it legal to download Instagram Posts and Carousels?

Saving content for personal, offline use — the modern equivalent of taping a song off the radio — is broadly accepted in most jurisdictions. Redistributing someone else's work, passing it off as yours, or using it commercially is not, and no downloader changes that. The copyright stays with whoever created it. What we can and can't reach

If a post is public, we can fetch it. If an account is private, we cannot — and we won't pretend otherwise. Stories are the other hard limit: they exist for 24 hours, so a link to yesterday's story genuinely has nothing behind it.

• For stories you can paste just the @username; there's no need to hunt down a story link.
