The sound is a separate thing you can keep

A Reel's audio is attached as a distinct track, which is why trending sounds can jump between thousands of videos. That means we can hand you the audio on its own as a 320 kbps MP3 without you having to strip it yourself in an editor. Useful for saving a track you want to identify later — and worth remembering that the music is still the rights-holder's, so a saved sound is for listening, not for republishing.

Vertical 1080×1920 is the real ceiling, not 4K

Reels are authored for a 9:16 phone screen and Instagram re-encodes uploads to a 1080-pixel width. A creator can film in 4K, but what Instagram stores — and therefore the best any downloader can give you — is normally 1080×1920. We read the DASH manifest to reach that top rendition instead of settling for the lower-quality progressive file, and we never upscale to fake a bigger number.

Codec matters more here than anywhere else

Instagram increasingly encodes Reels as VP9, which is excellent compression and a problem on an iPhone: Safari will not play VP9 inside an MP4. We list every rendition with its real codec and let your browser pick the best one it can actually open, so you get 1080p on Android Chrome and a playable H.264 file on iOS rather than a download that silently fails to open.

Instagram stores several renditions of every upload, and the good ones are hidden inside a DASH manifest as separate video and audio streams — which is exactly why so many tools skip them and serve the low-quality progressive file instead. Privacy: what we do and don't keep

We never ask for your Instagram username or password, and there is nothing to sign into. Links you paste are processed in memory and the resulting media is streamed through to you rather than saved. Popular links are cached for a few minutes purely so a viral post isn't fetched from Instagram a thousand times a minute, and that cache holds public metadata only. The person whose content you download is never notified — there is no view receipt on a download.

Is it legal to download Instagram Reels?

Saving content for personal, offline use — the modern equivalent of taping a song off the radio — is broadly accepted in most jurisdictions. Redistributing someone else's work, passing it off as yours, or using it commercially is not, and no downloader changes that. The copyright stays with whoever created it. Our rules of thumb: keep it for yourself, credit the creator if you reshare with permission, and never repost without it. What we can and can't reach

If a post is public, we can fetch it. If an account is private, we cannot — and we won't pretend otherwise. Private profiles, follower-only stories, deleted posts and archived content are all out of reach by design, because getting to them would mean impersonating a follower. Stories are the other hard limit: they exist for 24 hours, so a link to yesterday's story genuinely has nothing behind it.

Tips that save time

• For stories you can paste just the @username; there's no need to hunt down a story link.
