Instagram is built around streaming rather than keeping files, which is a reasonable product decision and an inconvenience when you need your own upload back, or a clip a client sent you, or footage you have been given permission to reuse. This tool closes that gap for content you are entitled to save, without asking you to trust it with your credentials.

Highlights are Stories that were rescued from the 24-hour clock

A Highlight is a curated set of past Stories the owner deliberately pinned to their profile. That single fact explains everything unusual about downloading one: the permanence, the odd link format, and why a Highlight can contain material years older than anything else on the account.

No deadline, so no rush — but also no second chance

Unlike Stories, a Highlight stays up until its owner removes it, so there is no 24-hour window to beat. The catch is that Highlights are downstream of the Story archive: if the owner deletes an individual archived Story, it vanishes from the Highlight too. Reels that were pinned years ago are the most common thing people lose this way, which is exactly why archiving a whole Highlight in one go is worth doing.

The link carries a highlight id, not a shortcode

Open the Highlight, tap the ••• menu and choose Copy link. You get a URL like instagram.com/stories/highlights/17896518372017015/ — that long number is a highlight id, a different identifier from the shortcode used by posts and Reels. Short instagram.com/s/… share links also work; we decode them to find the same id.

Built for bulk, so use the ZIP

Highlights are frequently long — thirty, fifty, a hundred items covering a trip, a product launch or a whole year. Every item resolves in one request and downloads together as a single ZIP with the original order preserved, so archiving a large Highlight is one click rather than an afternoon of tapping. Mixed photo-and-video Highlights come back correctly, each file in its native format.

Because Highlight items are old Stories, expect the mix to be inconsistent: something posted in 2020 may be lower resolution than something added last week. We always take the best rendition each individual item actually has.

What “original quality” actually means

Most downloaders hand you a 640×360 file and call it HD. Instagram stores several renditions of every upload, and the good ones are hidden inside a DASH manifest as separate video and audio streams — which is exactly why so many tools skip them and serve the low-quality progressive file instead. YesPotato reads the manifest, picks the highest bitrate rendition available and merges the streams losslessly with a stream copy. No re-encoding means no generation loss: the file you save is bit-for-bit the video Instagram is holding.

Privacy: what we do and don't keep

We never ask for your Instagram username or password, and there is nothing to sign into. Links you paste are processed in memory and the resulting media is streamed through to you rather than saved. Popular links are cached for a few minutes purely so a viral post isn't fetched from Instagram a thousand times a minute, and that cache holds public metadata only. Copyright and permission: read this before you download

Only download content you created yourself, content you own the rights to, or content whose rights-holder has given you permission. Everything on Instagram belongs to whoever made it — the video, the photographs and the music on the soundtrack can each have a different owner, and none of those rights transfer to you because a file reached your device. Downloading someone else's work to republish it, to pass it off as yours, to build an audience with it or to use it commercially is copyright infringement, and using this tool does not change that. What we can and can't reach

If a post is public, we can fetch it. If an account is private, we cannot — and we won't pretend otherwise. Private profiles, follower-only stories, deleted posts and archived content are all out of reach by design, because getting to them would mean impersonating a follower. Stories are the other hard limit: they exist for 24 hours, so a link to yesterday's story genuinely has nothing behind it.

Tips that save time

• On mobile, use the ••• menu → Copy link rather than the browser address bar — it gives a cleaner URL.
• For stories you can paste just the @username; there's no need to hunt down a story link.
• For highlights, open the highlight and use Copy link — the URL contains the highlight id we need.
• Carousel posts return every slide at once. Use “Download all as ZIP” instead of tapping through.
